Coastal to deep sea

The marine environment encompasses everything from coastal areas, which are most visible to humans, to the continental shelf and the remote open ocean and deep sea. Our seas and ocean consist of many different habitats which change in space and time. These habitats and marine ecosystems provide different values and services to humans and the understanding of each of these systems is essential for the sustainable use of ocean resources, goods and services and to minimize human impacts on marine ecosystems.
