Today, on 17th June 2024, EMB launched its Future Science Brief No. 11 on ‘Marine habitat mapping’ during a ‘Brown bag lunch’ event, kindly hosted by DG Environment in Brussels. The main messages from the document were presented by Working Group Chairs Prof. Simonetta Fraschetti and Dr. James Strong, followed by an interactive discussion with the audience, and with members of the Working Group.

The EMB Ambassadors and members of the EMB ECOP Network have teamed up with other early career and youth initiatives to make a submission to the Let's Be Nice to the Ocean initiative. The submission highlights the importance of involving youth and early careers in finding solutions for our Ocean.

The “Ecopath 40 years – The Ecosystem Continuum: From knowledge to decisions” conference and workshops were held from 3-8 June 2024 at the InnovOcean campus in Ostend. Co-hosted by the European Marine Board and the Flanders Marine Institute (Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee, VLIZ), this event celebrated four decades of the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) marine ecosystem modelling software, an increasingly important tool for marine management and policy making.

Dr Fiona Grant, Head of International Programmes at the Marine Institute in Ireland, has been elected as the new Chair of the European Marine Board. Dr Grant has represented the Marine Institute at the European Marine Board since 2014, and has served as EMB vice-Chair since 2020.

The European Marine Board (EMB) is actively supporting the ongoing efforts of the Ocean Decade to advance ocean science and sustainability, as evidenced by its presence at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference and satellite events held in Barcelona from 8 to 12 April 2024. EMB Executive Director Sheila Heymans, and Science Officers Britt Alexander and Ángel Muñiz Piniella, participated in the conference and in multiple satellite events, emphasising the importance of global cooperation for ocean science.
Elise Guillaume and Ruwanthi Gajadeera have been selected as the two new artists for the 2024 - 2025 edition of the EMBracing the Ocean programme.

The Proceedings are now available for the first EMB ECOP Network Forum which was held in Santiago de Compostela on 8-9 October 2023. The in-person event was organised by the EMB Ambassadors. The Proceedings outline what took place, and present the main messages and outcomes of the Forum.

The European Marine Board (EMB) invites applications for the position of Executive and Finance Officer. The EMB Executive and Finance Officer is employed by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) as part of a package of support provided by the Government of Flanders in hosting EMB at the InnovOcean site. The successful candidate will join the EMB Secretariat based at the InnovOcean campus in the port of Ostend, Belgium.

EMB is a partner in a new project with Oceans of Energy and 14 other leading European partners to scale up offshore solar to Gigawatts.
EMB is looking for two enthusiastic, engaged, and creative early career marine scientists to join their Ambassador Programme. The Ambassadors will play an important role in advocating for EMB and promoting the societal and political relevance of all aspects of the Ocean and marine sciences, including natural sciences, social sciences, policy, and humanities, within their own communities, and to a wide diversity of stakeholders in Europe. The two new Ambassadors will collaborate and liaise with our current Ambassadors and recent Alumni to share experiences and ideas, and work on activities together. They will also ensure the continuation of the EMB ECOP Network.
