In her new blog, EMB Young Ambassador Dr Rebecca Zitoun talks about academia's relationship with failure and how we should reconsider it.
EMB is looking for two new enthusiastic, engaged and creative marine scientists to join their Young Ambassador Programme. They will play an important role in advocating for EMB and promoting the societal and political relevance of marine natural sciences, marine social sciences and humanities, and the Ocean, within their own communities, and to a wide diversity of stakeholders. The two new Ambassadors will collaborate and liaise with our current Ambassadors and recent Alumni to share experiences and ideas.
EMB’s artist-in-residence programme ‘EMBracing the Ocean’ provides grants for creative individuals to inspire wide reaching societal change for Ocean sustainability by expanding societies’ understanding of the Ocean’s value and the urgency of ensuring its health and resilience now and into the future. The programme is open for applications from any creative discipline until 21st February 2022.
Recently endorsed as Implementing Partners of the Ocean Decade, the European Marine Board and JPI Oceans pledge to carry out a true ocean knowledge revolution on the continent.
Considering that marine geohazards are unavoidable and will certainly continue to occur in the future, it is crucial to improve and expand our knowledge of those events. EMB Position Paper Nº26 presents an overview of the type, distribution and impact of marine geohazards on the European coastal regions and Blue Economy sectors. It highlights novel scientific approaches that broaden our understanding of their processes, trigger mechanisms and precursors. The document points towards relevant actions that would ensure the development of effective risk-mitigation and science-based management practices and policies, thereby contributing to protect coastal population and economic activities at sea.
Today, speakers and participants from Europe and beyond gather at BluePoint in Brussels and online to attend the hybrid 8th EMB Forum on Supporting the Ocean Decade in Europe. Ocean Decade stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds and stakeholder groups will discuss how Europe can support the further development and eventual achievement of the Ocean Decade. The event will also highlight the activities that the European Marine Board is undertaking to support the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The EMB Young Ambassadors, together with the EMB Secretariat, are setting up a network to connect the Early Career Ocean Professionals within EMB member organizations.
To mark two years since the launch of Navigating the Future V, EMB have released a video highlighting the Navigating the Future publication series.
EMB Future Science Brief N°7 outlines the current state of our knowledge on the sources of anthropogenic sounds and the effects of noise on marine organisms. Moreover, it provides an overview of the measures that have been taken to address the issue of underwater noise. In order to develop proportionate mitigation strategies and effective regulation, we have to advance our knowledge about the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine organisms and their ecosystems.
