On 24 – 25 September 2020, the first EU4Ocean workshop– Designing Ocean Literacy action in Europe will be organised by the EU4Ocean Coalition, on behalf of the European Commission.

On Thursday 17 September 2020, Prof. Ferdinando Boero talked about "The cells of ecosystem functioning: Towards a holistic vision of marine space" at EMB's second Science Webinar. This topic was touched upon in EMB's flagship publication "Navigating the Future V". The webinar was 1 hour long and took place from 13:00 - 14:00 CEST.

On Thursday 20 August, EMB hosted its first Science Lunch Webinar on Marine Ecosystem Modelling: Using ecosystem models to address the ecological and economic effects of climate change and the CFP landing obligation. The webinar was 1 hour long and took place from 13:00 - 14:00 CEST.

The European Marine Board Spring Plenary meeting will take place on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May 2020 and will be held online. The event was intended to be hosted by the University of Gothenburg but current circumstances mean this is not possible. The plenary documents are now available on the restricted member pages.

The final conference of the SOPHIE Project which was scheduled for 30 March 2020 in Brussels was cancelled and replaced with a webinar to launch the Strategic Research Agenda for Oceans and Human Health Research in Europe. 

On Friday 14 February 2020, EMB hosted its 4th Brown Bag Lunch to discuss Blue Carbon. Blue Carbon refers to organic carbon that is captured and stored by the oceans and coastal ecosystems.  In particular, the vegetated coastal ecosystems of seagrass meadows, tidal marshes, and mangrove forests sequester and store more carbon per unit area than terrestrial forests and are now being recognised for their role in mitigating climate change. Prof. Hilary Kennedy from the University of Bangor (UK) is one of the leading experts in Europe on this topic and she provided some insight on the latest developments in this field.
