In this edition of the ECOP Wednesdays event series, hosted by the EMB Young Ambassadors and the EMB Secretariat for the EMB ECOP network, Louis Lambrechts will speak about "Building an Ocean Union: is the European Ocean Pact really the solution to Europe's longstanding need for science-based and coherent ocean policies?".

On the 9th June, European leaders took the stage at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference to present the European Ocean Pact to the world, the latest (but not the first) attempt from the European Union to establish a coherent, science-based and holistic framework for European ocean-related policies. In this talk, we will dive into how this Pact came to be, what it entails and include, and most importantly, whether its noble intention can truly materialise.
Louis Lambrechts is a Policy and Advocacy Specialist at the Oceano Azul Foundation. He supports the Foundation in its advisory role to various governments and institutions, particularly at the European level, promoting greater policy coherence and ambition in international and European ocean affairs. Before joining the Foundation, Louis worked for different non-governmental organisations, focusing on integrated ocean governance, environmental justice and sustainable fisheries management. He holds a Law (LLB) degree from the University of Aberdeen (UK) and a Masters (LLM) in Public International Law from Utrecht University (NL), with a specialization in Environmental Law and the Law of the Sea.
