Global Ocean Commission launch

International leaders will meet in London tonight for the launch of the Global Ocean Commission, an independent body set up to provide strategic advice for governance in the high seas - waters outside of national jurisdiction more than 200 nautical miles offshore. The Global Ocean Commission will provide recommendations on governance frameworks for managing threats and pressures such as overfishing and climate change in this vast and highly productive region. Final recommendations are due in early 2014, when the UN General Assembly will enter discussions on protecting high seas biodiversity.
