SOS Save our Seas EMBracing the Ocean project

On Thursday 18 September 2025, EMB hosted its 52nd Third Thursday Science Webinar featuring Ruwanthi Gajadeera who presented her EMBracing the Ocean artist-in-residence project "SOS Save our Seas".

Ruwanthi Gajadeera is an award-winning Sri Lankan textile and fashion designer, and a force for creative change in the fashion and textile world with unwavering commitment to sustainability with designs acting as a call to action. She was an EMBracing the Ocean artist-in-residence from 2024 - 2025.

Ruwanthi's project explored the devastating legacy of the X-Press Pearl disaster on Sri Lankan marine life, turning marine data into a multi-sensory exhibition which included textures, subtle scents, sound and heritage craft, and sustainable fashion.
