Marine Protected Areas in the European Union

On Thursday 19 June 2025, EMB will host its 50th Third Thursday Science Webinar featuring previous EMB Young Ambassador Juliette Biquet who will present on the topic of "Marine Protected Areas in the European Union".

Juliette is specializing in marine political ecology, doing her PhD at the Centro de Ciências do Mar, Portugal, and CNRS-CRIOBE and the Agroecology UMR at INRAE. She was an EMB Young Ambassador from 2022 - 2024, and one of the co-chairs of the EMB Navigating the Future VI working group. She is investigating the political processes shaping the regulation of human activities in the marine protected areas (MPAs) of European Union member states. Combining political science, law and geography, her talk will explore the current regulations and protection rationale in EU MPAs. She will briefly introduce her current research, questioning the decision-making and participation processes of various stakeholders at national level, their mobilization and contestation with regard to strict protection policies.

You can register for the webinar here, and it will also be live-streamed on the EMB YouTube Channel.
