In this edition of the ECOP Wednesdays event series, hosted by the EMB Young Ambassadors and the EMB Secretariat for the EMB ECOP network, Dorothy Jane Dankel, a Senior Researcher at SINTEF Ocean, Norway, will speak about "Extending the Peer Community for Science-based Ocean Futures: Insights on Transformative Change for ECOPs".

Dorothy Jane Dankel is a Senior Researcher at SINTEF Ocean, specializing in systems analysis and governance for sustainable marine innovation. She serves as Chair of the Nordic Marine Think Tank (NMTT) and is a program committee member of the Sustainable Ocean Solutions (SOS) network of committed Ocean changemakers from finance, research and policymaking. Dorothy’s work bridges science, policy, and societal transformation, with a focus on Ocean sustainability and responsible innovation.
In this talk, Dorothy Dankel reflects on lessons learned from her involvement in the EU Mission “Restore Our Ocean and Waters”, the recent Sustainable Ocean Solutions (SOS) Summit in San Francisco, and an inspiring expedition aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, the UN SDG14 Ocean Ambassador tall ship. She shares behind-the-scenes perspectives from Netflix’s “Our Oceans”, and introduces the 10-year €200 million Arctic Ocean 2050 Norwegian program, which envisions long-term sustainability in a rapidly changing polar environment dependent on science diplomacy.
Drawing on these experiences, Dorothy explores how Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) can actively shape transformative change in Ocean governance and innovation. The session will highlight practical strategies for sourcing universal values, fostering impactful conversations, and building collaborative networks that drive systemic change for the ocean we all depend on.
