From cumulative activity to ecological risk: advancing cumulative effects assessment for marine spatial planning

On Thursday 19 November 2026, EMB will host its 65th Third Thursday Science Webinar featuring Virginia Morejón, who will present the topic of "From cumulative activity to ecological risk: advancing cumulative effects assessment for marine spatial planning".

Virginia Morejón is a PhD researcher at University College Dublin and a Marine Institute Cullen Scholar. Her research focuses on improving cumulative effects assessment within Strategic Environmental Assessment and marine spatial planning, with particular emphasis on spatially explicit and ecosystem-based approaches. Her work has explored four-dimensional patterns of marine activity across space, season and depth, and how these can be linked to ecological pathways and potential cumulative risk. She also used to be a Young Ambassador for the European Marine Board ECOP Network.
