EMB at SURIMI General Assembly

Executive Director Sheila Heymans and Science Officer Ana Rodriguez attended the second SURIMI General Assembly, which was held at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona on 6-7 November 2025.

SURIMI is a Horizon Europe funded project that will create easy-to-use and freely available tools that draw on well-established expert fisheries dynamics models to help evaluate the effectiveness of fisheries management interventions. The novelty of SURIMI is that these models will be made interoperable, i.e. it will be possible to run them together as one model as they will exchange information, making the predictions more robust. Non-experts will be able to use the models through a graphical user interface. The models will have a strong socio-economic component and they will be integrated into the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean.

The aim of this General Assembly (GA) was to share work package progress and do collaborative workshops to advance the implementation of the project. The workshops covered stakeholder involvement, led by Ana, the SURIMI visual interface, communication and dissemination and ethics. The modellers also had a two-day workshop preceding the GA focused on advancing the model interoperability.

EMB leads the Work Package on stakeholder involvement. You can read more about EMB's involvement in SURIMI here.
