Consortium of Irish Universities joins the Marine Board

The Marine Board welcomed a new member at its plenary meeting on 16-17 October in the Netherlands. Professor Colin Brown (pictured left), Director of the Ryan Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), presented the application on behalf of a consortium of Irish Universities. The consortium is made up initially of NUIG and University College Cork, two of Ireland's leading Universities in marine research. NUIG is home to the Ryan Institute for Marine, Environmental and Energy Research while UCC is a founding partner of the Irish iMERC initiative, a major maritime and energy resource cluster based at Ringaskiddy in SW Ireland.

It is proposed that the NUIG/UCC consortium will open up by invitation to several other third-level institutions in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Irish Universities Consortium will join the Irish Marine Institute as a second Irish Marine Board member. The new Irish member was warmly welcomed by the existing members of the Board. "We very much look forward to the participation of the Irish Universities as an active Marine Board member of the future", stated Marine Board Chair, Kostas Nittis, in welcoming Professor Brown to the meeting.
